East Baray
(Yashodharatataka)
The East Baray was built by King Yashorvarman
I in 10th century. There is continuing debate as to its purpose. Certainly it provided irrigation
during the drier months of the year but also served to further highlight the power of the King.
The sheer size of the East Baray is impressive at 1.7 km x 7.8 km. The dykes of the Baray comprise over 8
million cubic meters of fill. As you can see from the photograph it has now largely filled with sediment
and is occupied by Preah Dak village and rice fields. |
